There is no definite history of naming this upazila. According to a legend, during the Pathan rule, an influential Hindu king named Harishchandra or Harihar lived in the village of Harihara north of Shailkupar. After hearing about the tyranny and torture of Raja Harihar of this region, General Daulat Khan was sent to this region along with his army to defeat him.
The distance from Pathanpara to Harihara was about 2 miles. General Daulat Khan first called on King Harihar to submit. But King Harihar rejected the offer. As a result, war between the two sides became inevitable. In this battle the king was defeated and killed. When Harihar's princess Shailbala came to the bank of Kumar river to escape by boat, the Pathan soldiers captured her and hacked her to death. From that, ‘Shail’ and ‘Kupa’ have been combined and Shailkupa has been named.
Shailbala, the daughter of Harihar Raja, fell in love with Masud Khan, a son of the Pathan dynasty. At one stage, Kumar appeared on the bank of the river on horseback to escape with Shailbala. King Harihar sent troops to different areas to search for his daughter. Shailabala and her boyfriend were caught by the king's men. Then, when he sent word to the king, he appeared on the bank of the river Kumar with the army and, unable to control his anger, hacked his daughter to death with a sword along with her lover.
The place where Shailbala was killed was named Shailkupa after him. Then Pathan general Harihar defeated Raja and destroyed his Rajpuri. Then Muslim domination spread in the region. Proof of this are the two old mosques. One is Shailkupa Shahi Mosque built in the style of Khan Jahani architecture, the other is Hitampur Shahi Mosque built in Hussain Shahi model.
