The apartment was once an artist's storage space, lacking basic amenities like water, electricity, and insulation, with the toilet located in the hallway. Despite these initial drawbacks, the couple recognized its potential due to ample natural light, three windows, and high ceilings with skylights. The renovation was a significant undertaking, centered around two main constraints: preserving the existing rustic fireplace and integrating a distinct bedroom, achieved by using color to define different zones and introduce a contemporary aesthetic.

A key design element was the decision to separate the living room and bedroom with a glass partition, which they made more affordably with a wood frame. The narrow bedroom was visually expanded with mirrors, and a storage bed was incorporated to maximize space. The kitchen, larger than initially planned for a 22m² space, features a raised countertop and colored grout for added style, and includes an oven and dishwasher. The small bathroom's functionality was optimized with a dual-purpose door that also serves as closet storage. The previously external toilet was creatively integrated into the apartment's bathroom.

Ekhi and Matthieu learned that planning and sourcing for small space furniture is a must in the early stages. They affectionately describe their 22m² apartment as their "little palace" and "extraordinary ordinary" home, a place they once only dreamed of living.
