Shark fishing has a much bigger impact on our oceans than most people realize. Sharks play a critical role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems — they help keep fish populations balanced, prevent disease from spreading, and support coral reef health by regulating the food chain. When sharks are removed, entire ecosystems begin to collapse.
Many people still don’t know that over 100 million sharks are killed every year, mostly for their fins, as bycatch, or to supply the exotic pet and meat trade. Sharks reproduce slowly, with some species taking 10–20+ years to mature and only having a few offspring in their lifetime. This means shark populations cannot recover at the rate they’re being removed.
The goal isn’t to blame — it’s to educate.
When we understand a species, we are much more likely to protect it.
