Vulnerability of girls and women to violence

As a result of stereotypes, discrimination and societal norms and stigma on the basis of their gender, girls and women are generally the ones who pay the heaviest tolling societies both in times of peace and in times of conflicts. While situation among countries in the continent vary, generally, compared to other parts of the world, Africa is the continent where progress in combating violence against women and girls is slowest.

This session focused on projects and initiatives of UNESCO, the African Union in the African continent, and in Angola, on how to counter gender-based violence, and empower women and girls to be active and become key players in the decision making process and efforts to shape their society to the best. It also focused on the efforts of notable women and organizations that are involved in promoting gender equality, and their contributions to mainstreaming the culture of peace in Africa.
