The air in Calle Feria hums with quiet anticipation. Even in the late afternoon, the narrow street—usually lively with its mercado charm—feels hushed, as if holding its breath. The scent of orange blossoms mingles with the faint wax of candles carried by penitents in the distance. A few locals hurry past, some dressed in their finest, others in the traditional luto of black dresses and mantillas, their silhouettes elegant against the old stone facades.

Moving toward Las Setas, the city opens up, and the mood shifts. Beneath the undulating wooden canopy, clusters of visitors and Sevillanos pause, some checking procession routes on their phones, others simply absorbing the solemn energy. From here, the distant sound of a saeta—a mournful flamenco hymn—floats through the air, sung from a balcony to a passing paso. The metallic glint of candlelight reflects off the gold-embroidered robes of nazarenos as they emerge from a side street, their pointed hoods casting long shadows.

Deeper into the downtown, the streets grow denser with spectators. Plaza de San Francisco is a sea of folded chairs and reverent whispers. The rhythmic drumbeat of a cofradía grows louder, and suddenly, a towering paso bearing the sorrowful Virgin sways into view, carried by dozens of costaleros. The crowd parts in silent awe as the float passes, its flowers trembling with each step. Women in black lace veils clutch rosaries, their eyes glistening—some in prayer, others in inherited grief.

By the time you reach Calle Sierpes, the vibe is electric yet deeply solemn. The balconies overflow with onlookers, and the slow march of the brotherhoods feels endless, a river of devotion winding through the city’s veins. The scent of incense is thick now, clinging to clothes and hair, a sacred perfume marking the night.

This is Jueves Santo in Sevilla: a city suspended between sorrow and beauty, where every corner whispers of centuries-old tradition, and the weight of the holy feels as tangible as the cobblestones underfoot.
