International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva praised India’s bold economic and structural reforms, calling it a key growth engine for the global economy. Speaking at the IMF’s semi-annual meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors, Georgieva highlighted India’s digital identity rollout, GST recalibration, and income tax reforms as examples of transformative policies. She said critics doubted India could implement digital ID at scale, but the country “proved them wrong.” With India projected to grow 6.5-6.8% in 2025-26, the IMF sees the nation as a critical driver amid slowing global growth, US-China trade tensions, and rising public debt in developing countries. Georgieva also cautioned that global debt could surpass 100% of GDP by 2029, highlighting ongoing challenges for developing economies.
