Sugar mill production creates significant pollution, primarily through large volumes of high-organic wastewater (high BOD/COD), air pollutants like particulate matter (PM), SO₂, NOx from burning bagasse, and solid waste like press mud, impacting water quality, air, soil health, and leading to respiratory issues and ecosystem damage if untreated. Key pollutants include organic matter, suspended solids, oil/grease, heavy metals, and gases, harming aquatic life and contaminating groundwater. 

Burning bagasse (sugarcane fiber) for power releases particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and carbon monoxide (CO). These pollutants cause respiratory diseases (like tuberculosis), acid rain, and smog.
 
Sugar dust itself poses explosion risks and contributes to particulate pollution during processing. 

Ash from bagasse combustion often forms large piles, releasing dust and potentially containing heavy metals, impacting nearby areas. 

Industries are required to treat wastewater (using anaerobic/aerobic systems) and manage byproducts to meet environmental standards.
