Zohran Mamdani celebrated his win in the New York City elections by borrowing a quote from Jawaharlal Nehru's iconic Tryst with Destiny speech. Mamdani quoted Nehru's speech from 1947 when India marked its independence from over 200 years of British rule. "Standing before you, I remember the words of Jawaharlal Nehru. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance," quoted Mamdani, adding that tonight New York has stepped from the old into the new.
