I review and offer suggestions for some returned essay answers from the 2022 February California Bar Exam.

Normally, some common feedback I give to bar takers on their essays include:

First and foremost, focusing on identifying all the relevant issues completely.
Presenting issues clearly.
Not commingling rules and applications.

But here, these essays have for the most part done well in terms of the above. While they could still use more issue identification, there's a common pattern of rule statements that need to be improved. Be specific and particular about the requirements of the rule.

Other topics mentioned:

In California essays, Professional Responsibility (PR) is very important. Know the issues in and out.
Use counterarguments with issues, not facts.
Memorization is not the same as being able to recite. Be able to recite rule elements to be able to use them in the essay.
Write such that a layman (your grandma, boyfriend, 5-year-old child, an alien from outer space, etc.) can understand your reasoning.
