Keith Ellison began his term as Minnesota’s Attorney General in January 2019. He is the first African American and the first Muslim American to be elected to statewide office in Minnesota.

Attorney General Ellison was the lead prosecutor in the matter of the May 2020 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. He led the team that successfully convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on a charge of second-degree unintentional murder. He also headed the team that successfully prosecuted former Brooklyn Center police officer Kimberly Potter on a charge of first-and-second degree manslaughter in the matter of the April 2021 death of Daunte Wright.

As the People’s Lawyer, AG Ellison leads the Attorney General’s Office in the areas of consumer-protection litigation, public safety, and represents more than 100 Minnesota agencies, boards, and commissions. He also led substantive policy initiatives aimed at lowering the cost of pharmaceuticals, reducing deadly force encounters between law enforcement and civilians, and strengthening the economic security of women.

Prior to his election as Attorney General, AG Ellison was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 2007 to 2019. Before entering Congress, AG Ellison served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for four years. Earlier in his career, Ellison had extensive experience as a criminal-defense and civil-rights attorney for 16 years.
