Partying With Tugu People in Flooded Jakarta

Описание к видео Partying With Tugu People in Flooded Jakarta

Every year on January 1, the Tugu people celebrate Rabo Rabo. They start the new year with kroncong music, dancing and visiting their relatives. I had the chance to come along and film the event. The streets were all flooded but that didn't kill the mood. Everyone was still very happy and festive.

The Tugu people are descended from Portuguese settlers in Jakarta. These settlers were enslaved but that didn't sit right with the Dutch colonial government since they were christians. They were forced to convert to protestantism and were relocated to kampung Tugu. This is where they preserved their traditions up until this day.

The Tugu people mixed and intermarried with different ethnic groups. This fusion of people groups created a unique kroncong music genre with lyrics in Dutch, Portuguese and Indonesian.

Special thanks to @sushibooi_ (instagram) for letting me use some of his video footage!
