Putangirua Pinnacles [NZ] | Hiking with kids (LOTR filming location)

We hiked the 3km return hike to the stunning Putangirua Pinnacles in early December 2021. The pinnacles are best known as the backdrop for the Paths of the Dead in the Lord of the Rings film Return of the King.

The hike consisted of multiple stream crossings, bush walk, and trekking along loose rocks/gravel, and was more strenuous than we had anticipated. Including a stop at the pinnacles for lunch and pictures, the hike took us a total of three hours to complete with our 4 year old.
