Sawai Madhopur was under the Kota state in the old times, but in 1763, Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I of Jaipur took control of the fort of Ranthambore and established the city of Sawai Madhopur in his name.

The pride of Sawai Madhopur is the Ranthambore Fort. Which was built by Ranthamman Raja in the 9th century. The history of this fort is very glorious and brave. In 1301, when Alauddin Khilji attacked this fort. Then the king of this place was Hamir Dev Chauhan. Who had defeated Alauddin's army twice before this war. But in this war fought in 1301, 2 generals of Hamir Dev made a treaty with Alauddin Khilji. Because of which Shiv Bhagat Hamir Dev Chauhan offered his head at the feet of Shiva.
