Mara Salva Trucha, better known as MS-13, is the deadliest street gang on earth. It arose out of the immigrant ghettos of Los Angeles in the early 1980's by Salvadoran immigrants looking to protect themselves against abuses and exploitation by Mexican gangs like The Mexican Mafia. They grew and expanded across America, and today operate all over the world. They are known for their ultra-violent methods, including killings of police officers and civilians. In the mid-1990's, as MS-13 criminals began getting deported back to their home countries in Central America, they soon took over El Salvador and made it their base of operations. In 2019, Nayib Bukele became President of El Salvador and implemented Martial Law to try and tackle the gang problem. He also built an infamous SuperMax prison that houses 70,000 gang members. Now, the homicide rate in El Salvador is one of the lowest in Latin America, and the country is beginning to have a renaissance. Now that Bitcoin has become the national currency, El Salvador has started to attract foreign investment and could someday become one of the richest countries in the world.
