Capitol CL 80282
Julia Lee was a pianist, singer and arranger from Kansas City who for some reasons (amongst them her lifelong dislike of travel) only started to get to some fame when she was already in her fourties, a fact that is a shame considering her enormous talent and wit. Her specialty was, among other things, "the songs my mother taught me not to sing", as she used to describe her rousing rhythm and blues dancefloor bombers based on lyrics mainly revolving around sex and drugs.
Personnel: Julia Lee, voice and piano; Benny Carter, alto sax; Vic Dickenson, trombone; Dave Cavanaugh, tenor sax; Jack Marshall, guitar; Billy Hadnott, bass; Baby Lovett, drums.
