Ashley Parkhill is a fourth-year Biological Science student who works as a work-study student at the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics (CBG) on the University of Guelph campus. CBG is home to North America's largest DNA barcode database, generating 3 million new barcodes annually.

Specimens from around the world, including beetles, wasps, butterflies, and various other taxonomic groups, are shipped to CBG for DNA barcoding. Here they are sorted, photographed, sequenced, analysed, and archived. Their data is uploaded to the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD), where they can be accessed for free by researchers around the world. As a work-study student, Ashley helps archive these specimens.

CBG's work is crucial for environmental conservation and global biodiversity preservation. We can't protect species if we don't know they exist.

The technology developed by CBG's founder and CEO, Dr. Paul Hebert, has revolutionized species identification. Through the International Barcode of Life (iBOL) consortium, CBG collaborates with over 1,000 researchers in 41 countries to create a global DNA barcode reference library with a vision to identify all species on the planet.
