(28 Jul 2016) Turkey's Supreme Military Council will meet in Ankara on Thursday for the first time since the coup attempt on 15 July that killed around 290 people.
The meeting is expected to shine a light on the future structure of the Turkish army after its pivotal role in the events of the coup.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Ahmet Kasim Han, a political scientist from Kadir Has University, said the meeting would provide clues about the future command and control structure of the armed forces.
Han also said that this council would provide an opportunity for the Turkish Armed Forces to build a renewed relationship with the people of Turkish Republic after the coup attempt "largely devastated the reputation of Turkish Armed Forces in the country."
Those officers suspected of being involved in the coup are widely expected to be forced into retirement, he added.
Turkey has detained some 15,000 people following the attempted coup, including about 10,000 military personnel.
Turkey's state run news agency said on Wednesday that close to 1,700 officers had been formally discharged.
The Anadolu Agency also said the government had decided to close down dozens of media organisations, including 45 newspapers and 16 television stations.
Also on Wednesday, a statement by the Turkish military said that as many as 35 warplanes, 37 helicopters, 74 tanks and three navy vessels were used by the plotters in their failed coup attempt.
At least 8,651 military personnel were involved, it said, adding that they constituted 1.5 percent of the Armed Forces' personnel.
