Why Sodium ion Batteries will be Extremely Cheap

Compared to lithium, sodium is much more abundant and is widely distributed across Earth’s crust. This abundance can lead to lower raw material costs, which can directly translate into lower production costs. In additional to lower costs, sodium ion batteries can offer several advantages over traditional lithium ion batteries, but there are also some areas where lithium ion batteries perform better.

Energy density is one important areas where lithium ion batteries exceed sodium ion batteries. This is important for applications where energy density makes a big difference, such as in portable electronics or electric vehicles. We probably won’t see sodium ion batteries in these areas for quite some time, but we are already beginning to see sodium ion batteries being used in applications where energy density is as great of a concern, such as stationary storage.
