Tarikh Episode 461

Tarikh is a daily Hindi programme in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons and Incidents. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Robert Hanssen, a former FBI agent who was convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and later, Russia, for more than 20 years. He was born on April 18, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in a devout Catholic family.

Hanssen joined the FBI in 1976 and worked in various roles, including as a counterintelligence agent. However, unbeknownst to his colleagues, he began spying for the Soviet Union in 1979, providing them with classified information about FBI operations and intelligence-gathering techniques.

Hanssen's espionage activities continued for more than two decades, during which time he received over $1.4 million in cash and diamonds from his Soviet and later Russian handlers. He also provided the Russians with information that compromised the identities of several US intelligence agents and caused significant damage to US national security.

Hanssen was eventually caught in 2001, thanks to the efforts of a team of FBI agents who had been investigating him for several years. He pleaded guilty to espionage charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
