Statistics 101: Hypothesis Tests for the Variance

In this video, we learn how to conduct hypothesis tests for the variance as compared to some standard or hypothesized value. We learn the conceptual background and then do two example problems. Oftentimes quality assurance professionals or other analysts wish to test whether or not a single population variance meets a predetermined goal or industry standard. Since sampling error is involved, the sample variances fall over a range in the chi-square distribution. The sample will most likely be different than the hypothesized, but is the difference significant? Let's find out.
