New “REAL” Communication from Bungie #shorts. Yesterday, August 15, we got a raw Twitter video from Lead Game Director at Bungie, Joe Blackburn. Wow, what a cool name. (17m video) He gave us a very natural and human response to the uproar from the State of the Game news post from about a week ago that didn’t touch on many of the obvious problems as if they were ignoring it. (You can see my video on the topic on my YouTube channel.)

From this Twitter video, it seemed like they were instead more focused and burned out on the upcoming content and didn’t put the necessary time into that news post. Beyond that, in my opinion, not a lot of impactful information was talked about aside from them focusing on releasing PvP map packs vs a “do all” map, the new PvP mode Checkmate which focuses more on primary gun play, and refocusing the rewards system to make the core playlists worth more.

The vast majority of responses to this video were very positive, which I think is less about the information and more about people being happy that it seemed like they were finally being listened to. And from what I can tell, lately a lot of people feel like Bungie has been focused on churning out content to sell, and less about the community needs.

Which I personally disagree about as I have read nearly every TWAB and TWID from the last 4 years and seen their continuous acknowledgments to the statistics, creator posts, and poll data and they almost always change directions for. And although they have had a few setbacks on the communication front, I think this is another standard case of the company listening to the loudest top 5% of veterans players and creators, when the majority of their money and players are the bottom 60% of casuals. Where trying to balance and understand the very different values of these demographics can make it seem like they are not listening.
