The 7 sins of greenwashing

1. Hidden trade-offs
One of the most common hidden trade-offs in manufacturing is deforestation. Companies do not always disclose the environmental damage and carbon emissions in their product labelling or sustainability reporting.

2. No proof
Companies making environmental claims in their product hangtags without providing any evidence.

3. Vagueness
Companies making dubious descriptions and lofty environmental claims.

4. Worshipping false labels

5. Irrelevance and deflection
Companies may use bona-fide but irrelevant certification to deflect consumers from lack of environmental efforts. For example: ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management system but not for climate disclosures.

6. Lesser of two evils
Fashion brands are offering "sustainable" clothes from organic cotton or recycled material without mentioning that the pollution, carbon emissions,
water usage and wastages to produce clothes remain environmentally damaging.

7. Fibbing
Outright misleading to deceive.

Sustainability does not need greenwashing.
