Special Report - Putting Kochi on 'Track'

Serene Kochi has grown from an ancient port city to a well-developed trading centre. According to estimated figures, the population of Kochi city as of 2014 was around 624,859. There has been a descent in the population growth of Kochi city over the last 10 years; however its metropolitan area population has been increasing by over 3% every year.

The city’s metropolitan area was home to more than 2,277,620 people in 2014. The increasing population figures bring a lot of challenges for the government to maintain health and other facilities in the city. Construction of the Kochi Metro (Rapid transit system) is one of the steps taken by the Government to improve mobility within the city limits.
