Do you get weird personal text messages from random numbers? They might ask to meet up or get a cup of coffee, but you have no idea who they are?

According to the self-proclaimed former King of SMS (the text message protocol), Nikita Bier, it's spammers trying to "warm up" a phone number. They want the phone providers to recognize a number as legitimate before they start sending out spam messages. They do this by having totally normal text conversations with people like you. Eventually, once it's warm, they'll use the number for spamming.

The cell phone providers want you to do nothing with the text - don't even reply with STOP. I mark them as junk and delete the text, which notifies my cell phone provider and will counter the spammers attempts to warm up the number.

Never respond to unsolicited text messages or phone calls, it's usually part of a scam and you don't want to become a victim.
