Steven & Vicki | I Thought I Lost You

Can you tell that Tales of the TARDIS got to me?

Seeing these two together again hit me really hard. I've always had a very soft spot for both of these characters and this reunion was absolutely perfect. It felt like such a love letter to those of us who truly love that era of the show. I really wanted to put something together in tribute to it and to Steven and Vicki's wonderful sibling-like relationship, and this song ended up in my head because of the circumstances of this reunion. I haven't been able to stop thinking about the fact that they both easily could have thought there was a real possibility the other might be dead; Vicki last saw Steven bleeding out and slipping away from consciousness, and from Steven's point of view he just wakes up to learn that they've left her behind in a city that's being razed to the ground and its inhabitants slaughtered. They didn't get a proper goodbye to one another and would have no way of knowing for certain what the other's fate would be. This is a reunion of two people who must have spent decades of their lives just hoping and praying that their friend did indeed make it out okay. The context of their last time together isn't outright addressed, and I don't know how much it was thought about when they filmed this, but I still see the absolute shock and joy of friends not only reuniting after most of their lives but learning for the very first time that they DID survive, and even better, thrive. Their reactions to each other are so emotional, taking in each other's presence like it's a miracle. I never expected to see either of them again, let alone together, but I'm so glad we've been given this to provide closure and joy. It was everything I could have wanted, and it just makes me appreciate their familial relationship all the more.

Aaaand once again I'm unintentionally ignoring projects I actually intended to make in favor of First Doctor tributes on a whim. I swear I'll eventually do things that aren't Doctor Who lol, even if that will probably always be the main thing. I just apparently can't promise when these other things will be!

(Next day edit: Welp, Peter Purves himself has seen this from my posting it on Twitter and commented on it there. My funeral will be held shortly.)

(Edit some months later: After a rewatch of The Myth Makers I realized Vicki never actually sees the state he's in by the end, unless offscreen she crossed paths with Katarina carrying him. Oh well. Point still stands.)
