"I was one of a handful of reporters who was given access to the court gallery today as former President Trump appeared for his first appearance on the latest indictment related to the January 6th insurrection. Mr. Trump, the former president, entered at about 3:51 p.m. and he waited for almost 25 minutes for the magistrate judge to arrive and for the hearing to begin."

"The former president was briefed by the magistrate judge about the four counts that he faces against him and the prison time, which would add up to decades in prison were he to be convicted of those crimes. There wasn't really much discussion beyond that about the case because this was an initial hearing. But they set a future hearing for later this month and indicate that they want the case to move as quickly as possible."

"Jack Smith, the special counsel, actually came into the courtroom a few minutes before President Trump. Smith, when he entered, the gallery was talking amongst itself. But when Smith entered, there was a rush of whispering. It became a lot more quiet, and it fell into near silence for the remainder of the time that we were in the courtroom. Trump came in a few minutes after Smith. He appeared to look in Smith's direction but was looking across the gallery. At one point, he appeared to mouth the word 'hi' to somebody in the gallery. Smith was talking to someone on his right for much of the hearing, much of the court before the hearing began. He was whispering to the person and often turning to the left in the direction of the former president. We don't know for sure whether Trump and Smith made eye contact from roughly 20 feet away, because from where I was sitting, I could only see the back of Smith's head. But there definitely were times that Trump was looking in Smith's direction."
