Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez, President of the Republic of Cuba, addresses the general debate of the 76th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 21-27 September 2021).

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said the US blockade on Cuba has been “opportunistically and criminally intensified” in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic describing it as the “most cruel and longest-lasting economic, commercial and financial blockade ever imposed on any nation.”

In a pre-recorded message to the UN General Assembly’s General Debate, Díaz-Canel said the US Government “has not ceased for a single minute in its attacks against Cuba” for more than 60 years. However, he added that at this crucial and challenging moment for all nations, “its aggressiveness exceeds all limits.”

The Cuban President said the current Democratic administration is maintaining the 243 coercive measures adopted by the US president Donald Trump's administration, including Cuba’s inclusion in the list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism. He said an unconventional war is launched against his country, to which the US Government has allocated millions in order to portray, both internally and externally, a false image of the Cuban reality, sow confusion, destabilize and discredit the country and vindicate the its regime change doctrine.

Díaz-Canel said, “They have done everything to erase the Cuban Revolution from the political map to the world. They accept no alternatives to the model they conceive for their own backyard. Their plan is perverse and incompatible with the democracy and freedom they advocate. But our enemies must know clearly that we will not give away the Fatherland and the Revolution that several generations of patriots bequeathed to us by standing their ground.”

The Cuban President said, despite the challenges, Cuba continues to respond to the pandemic, adding that his country had sent more than 4,700 workers organized into 57 medical brigades to 40 countries and territories affected by COVID-19. He said Cuban scientists also developed three vaccines and two vaccine candidates, and noted that more than 15.8 million doses have been administered in the country. He expected the country to be fully immunized by the end of 2021.

Díaz-Canel said the United Nations could not ignore the lessons learned in Afghanistan. He said it took two decades of occupation, thousands of deaths, 10 million displaced and billions of dollars to reach the conclusion that terrorism cannot be prevented or fought with bombs; and that occupation only leads to destruction. He underscored that no country has the right to impose its will on sovereign nations.

The Cuban President said, “Afghanistan is not an isolated case. It became obvious that wherever the United States intervenes, instability, death and hardship increase, leaving behind long-lasting scars.”

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.

But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
