Have you ever wondered what happens when you stand at or cross the equator?

This experiment by a local tour guide in Mogotio, Baringo County explains it all.

Water is poured into a bowl with a hole at the center where it gently lets out the water...

When this is done at the Equator line, there is zero movement of the water; they remain still as they are let out of the hole.

As you cross over to the Northern Hemisphere, you notice clockwise movement characterzed by the stick floating on the water.

The opposite happens when you cross over to the Southern Hemisphere.

Wondering what causes this?

The earth is constantly spinning around its axis from west to east.

And because the Earth is a sphere and wider in the middle, the points at the Equator spin faster than those at the poles.

So when wind blows across the equator, the high spinning momentum is conserved hence any object/fluid moving on or over the earth is deflected to the right at the North and to the left to the South.

This is referred to as coriolis effect.

Coriolis Effect is a phenomenon that causes fluids like water and air to move in a circular manner as they travel across or above the earths surface.
