Описание к видео A visit to The Diamond in Clones, Co Monaghan 2020

A video and slideshow of photos I took of The Diamond in Clones during my visit to Clones in County Monaghan on Saturday 19th December 2020.

The Diamond is in the centre of Clones and dates from when the town of Clones was laid out in the 17th Century. The N54 Monaghan-Cavan route passes through the Diamond. Streets that meet at the Diamond are Fermanagh Street, Cara Street, McCurtain Street, Annalore Street and Monaghan Street.

The High Cross in The Diamond dates from either the 9th or 10th century and the head from a later date. It depicts scenes from the Old Testament and New Testament. The High Cross belongs to the Ulster group of Scripture Crosses. Near the High Cross is a seat made out of stone that was installed in 2007.

St. Tiarnach's Church of Ireland is at a height at the northwestern end of The Diamond. It is also spelt as St. Tighernach's Church of Ireland. It was built between 1823 and 1825. It was designed by William Farrell. It replaced an older church built in 1641 that was rebuilt in 1696. This church functioned as a pro Cathedral between 1850 and 1886 when the Church of Ireland Diocese of Clogher was United with Armagh. The transepts, vestry and porch were added to this church in 1858. The base of the tower was converted into the chancel during the renovations carried out in 1858. Further renovations and improvements were carried out in 1882. It is one of four churches in the Clones St. Tighernach's Union of Parishes in the Diocese of Clogher.

The Market House in The Diamond was built between 1844 and 1846. It was designed by William Deane Butler. It replaced the older Market House that was built in 1746. The eastern part of the Market House is occupied by Bank of Ireland. The Market House used to the home to the headquarters of Monaghan County Library from 1928 until 2008 when the new County Library opened on Jubilee Road in Clones.

At the southeastern end of the Diamond there is a green area in the middle with seating and a fountain. The original fountain in the Diamond was erected in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. It was damaged around 1965 when a brewery truck reversed into it.

Clones Post Office used to be located in The Diamond and was built in 1903. It has since relocated to Fermanagh Street in Clones.
