All of us want to know where to find morels, I personally think that the best places are abandoned apple orchards. Morel mushrooms ( morchella esculenta ) make mycorrhizal associations with tulip trees, ash trees, and elm trees among others. But the places I've had the most luck morel foraging has been abandoned apple orchards.

A word of caution however, many of these abandoned orchards have been treated with lead arsenate, a chemical pesticide that was used profusely on apple orchards up to about the 1950s to treat pests like the coddling moth. Pesticides like this eventually were supplanted by other organic pesticides. Because morels are mycorrhizal fungi, they develop a symbiotic relationship with the apple trees in these abandoned apple orchards. Wild edible mushrooms with mycorrhizal properties like morels share nutrients with the root structures of the dying apple trees of these apple orchards.

I feel that although apple orchards should be explored by foragers for their likelihood of producing morels, it is irresponsible to not warn these would be foragers about the history of agriculture and pesticides surrounding these orchards.

Wild apple orchards are much better candidates for morel foraging then farm orchards since they are the first manmade orchards in the americas, they were produced and managed completely organically, and have been largely reconstituted in nature in present day.
