Earlier this year (2021), I was privileged to listen to a speech made by the head girl of OMS, Mage Troskie. The speech was intended for the new grade 8 learners who, according to high school customs, participate in activities lead by the grade 12 learners to transition from primary school to high school. The focus of the speech was to remind the younger learners that it was time to look up and remember where their strength came from.

Not too long after the speech was shared on social media, I also received it from a family member on the morning of 22 April 2021 on my way to work. I was reminded of Mage's powerful words, when I stopped at a traffic light next to a woman begging for food and money. I asked her name and whether she would be standing in the same place the next morning, with the intention of bringing her some supplies. She indicated that she would not be there as she had to be at hospital to receive chemo therapy.

As I drove away, the song, `Look Up Child' by Lauren Daigle started playing on Radio Tygerberg 104 FM, and I knew that the lady begging at the traffic lights; the people in the cars around me and people everywhere had the right to look up to the light, regardless of our stories.
The song starts by acknowledging that we all have a story to tell and sometimes our journeys lead us away from the Light, but it is never too late to look up and remember that Jesus is the light of the world for in Him, we become a new creation!
