'Off Grid' in Arctic Sweden: The Dag Hammarskjöldleden, Nikkaluokta to Abisko

The Dag Hammarskjöldleden (Dag Hammarskjöld Way) is a 105 kilometre trekking route in Arctic Sweden. Named after Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld, a Swedish diplomat and philosopher who tragically died in a plane crash in 1961, it begins at Abisko and ends at Nikkaluokta. The Abisko to Singi section follows the same route as the very popular Kungsleden (The King's Way). We did this trail in reverse beginning at Nikkaloukta and ending at Abisko, as this tallied well with our public transport plans to and from Kiruna. Going this way carrying heavy packs meant a less punishing gradient up to the highest point on the route at the Tjäktja Pass (1,150 m). Dag Hammarskjöldleden is well-served with mountain huts and there are endless opportunities for truly excellent wild camping. The scenery of glaciated mountains, lakes, alpine tundra, rushing rivers and birch forest is utterly epic, making this one of the best easily accessible multi-day routes in Arctic Sweden.
