"This South Park home was built at the onset of South Park’s development in the early 20th century. From the outset, it was the home of Oliver Perry Chitwood, a distinguished History professor and college dean, at West Virginia University from 1909 to the 1970s. It was rumored that Chitwood insisted that new unmarried male professors were required to live in an upstairs apartment. So instrumental was Chitwood to WVU’s modern development that a building in Woodburn Circle was named for him. After a hiatus, during which several owners completely renovated the plumbing, electricity, and heating systems, the house became the home of two WVU History Professors, who have lived there for the past thirty years.
