I was very pleased by the design of this fitness band whereby the main unit fits into the silicone strap then, by pushing on the unit's underside, it can be released from the band in incorporates its own USB charging plug hence no need to carry any additional charging cables or connectors - so first impressions were very good.
The band is a very neat design, smooth and sleek and, unlike some bands, this one is very easy to fasten as the pins push through the strap with a reassuring 'click'. Operation is equally simple with a 3-second touch the screen to switch it on, a swipe to the side to access the next menu screen and a tap to access a sub-menu then a longer tap to select.
Setup and pairing were simple: just download the 'Zeroner Health' app onto the smartphone, pair via Bluetooth and the time, date etc were automatically syncronised with the phone. Incoming phone calls and text messages or other notifications (facebook, twitter, gmail, skype...) are pushed to the band generate a vibration on the fitness band which then displays the caller's number or text message, as appropriate. Sleep monitoring can be set to auto-sleep with no need to manually switch on the 'sleep' mode and sleep is recorded as light sleep and deep sleep which seems reasonably accurate and certainly recorded my awake spells correctly. The pedometer feature works quite well too:
I tested it by taking it out on a walk noting that it accurately counted my steps and distance covered although, without having set my stride length, it is surprising that it was actually accurate. Accuracy is about +95% when walking at a steady rhythm on flat ground but decreases when walking over rough ground, steps etc.
The app offers a lot of features and functions, syncs instantly it is switched on, but it is not quite perfect:
There are a few little quirks with the app, mostly relating to the grammar which isn't a wholly correct translation from the original (probably) Chinese. The top of the screen gives a daily 'health index' which increases throughout the day depending on how active I'd been during the day, and was accompanied by 'motivating' messages such as "keep enough sleep and exercise!!" or " healthy body, work hard for 100 marks" Personally, I would prefer the the app to just stick to the figures and forget the supposedly inspirational messages which are poorly translated. Also, when setting up the user profile and asked about 'work type' and 'body status' the options of 'worse health', 'lack exercises', 'moderate exercises' or 'frequent exercises' would benefit from an improved translation, although I can guess what these are supposed to mean and can look past a little dodgy grammar!
Another observation relates to body weight targets. I weigh 52kg and have a BMI of 16.8 which the fitness band has confirmed and records me as 'standard' rather than 'thin' or 'overweight'. This is actually under-weight (in the UK, at least) but the band has given me a weight target of losing 0.75kg which would be completely wrong for my height and weight; it would be healthier to gain weight, not lose it (or is the algorithm set for the Chinese with a smaller and slimmer physique?). Care should be taken if there is any risk of this being used by a person with an eating disorder.
Strengths:
very sleek design and easy to fasten
very clear, bright, easy to read, LED display which can be either landscape or portrait
instant connection via Bluetooth to my phone (Blackview BV6000 running Android 6)
incorporates its own charging plug
IP65 waterproof (can wear it in the shower - but not for swimming)
Weaknesses
No heart rate monitor
step counter is not quite as accurate as my pedometer
app needs some tweaking for the British market
I feel the fitness band is superior to the app and I would like to see the latter tweaked and the phrases such as 'nice mood' or 'upset~late slept' omitted and the body weights and weight loss targets adjusted for European body weights rather than the more petite Chinese. With these tweaks I would award 5-stars but have deleted a star due to the smartband being somewhat let down by the app.
