Winter Campuccino on Firebox Ti & Trying out Dune Knife by BeaverCraft

Birchbark flutters in the winter breeze and the snow crunches underfoot as we head to the woods. With a new bushcraft knife in hand to try out, the Dune by BeaverCraft Tools, the trunk of a long-since fallen balsam fir is a good source of dry wood. A few remaining knots put up some resistance but, with a little prying effort, a bundle of tinder is soon in hand.

Winter has been mild thus far and the brook, yet to freeze over completely, flows merrily along its usual channel.

Once a potential stopping spot is identified, a collapsible aluminum shovel comes in handy to clear away the snow. A few hundred feet beyond on the knoll above, a trio of dead-standing saplings are quickly downed with a handsaw and returned to the clearing.

The Dune knife is put through its paces: slashing off the branches of the saplings, chopping them into foot-long lengths, battoning and finally feather-sticking.

Suddenly, the patches of blue in the sky cloud over and the hereto gently drifting snowflakes begin to fall more intensely. A sharp wind picks up and the snow drives into us. A metalized polyethylene tarp is quickly strung up as a barrier against the elements and we relocate into its shelter.

Next the Firebox stove is pulled from the backpack and set up on a stone off the wet ground. A quick spark from a fero rod on to the prepared feather stick has a fire glowing and dancing before us in short order.

The vintage expresso maker is placed over the flames to work its own kind of magic and then followed by milk warmed in the French press. Coffee poured into our titanium cups with milk and thick froth added, a little cinnamon and sugar sprinkled atop is the finishing touch.

The snow squall over, the woods is again serene. While we quietly enjoy our campuccions, snow-covered branches wave in the occasional breeze to the sound of water bubbling over rocks in the brook.

The Dune knife was kindly given to us by BeaverCraft Tools. We were quite impressed by its quality for the price (sharp-out-of-the box, sharp spine, leather sheath, wooden handle, and blade sharpens easily) thus decided to make a video with it.
