Fall 2023 Evening Lecture Series: Kara Carmack, David Ebony, Sergio Pardo López, and Karen Wilkin, "Stephen Antonakos Drawings: Geometry and Space—A Panel Discussion," recorded on November 8, 2023.

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition Stephen Antonakos Drawings: Geometry and Space, this panel will explore the life and work of Stephen Antonakos. The exhibition, curated by Karen Wilkin, will be on view from November 4, 2023 — January 7, 2024 at the NYSS Main Gallery. Kara Carmack, NYSS Exhibitions and Public Programs Officer, will moderate the discussion among David Ebony, Sergio Pardo López, and Karen Wilkin.

Kara Carmack is the Exhibitions and Public Programs Officer at the New York Studio School. She received her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin and specializes in modern and contemporary art. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications, including the Journal of Visual Culture and a forthcoming anthology dedicated to the intersection of Pop art and cinema published by the University of Edinburgh Press. Carmack’s research has been supported most recently by the American Association of University Women and the Association of Historians of American Art.

David Ebony is a Contributing Editor of Art in America, and formerly the magazine’s Managing Editor. He is a long-standing member of International Association of Art Critics, and a former board member of the organization. Currently a senior editor at SNAP Editions, he is founding editor of the company’s “Snapshot of the Art World.” He is also the author of “David Ebony + Art Books,” a long-running column for Yale University Press online. He frequently contributes to artnet News, The Magazine Antiques, The Brooklyn Rail, and Lacanian Ink, among other publications. Ebony is the author of numerous artist monographs, including recent titles Stephen Antonakos: Neon and Geometry (2023, Rizzoli); and Larry Poons (2023, Abbeville Press). He is also an independent curator.

Sergio Pardo López is an arts administrator, curator, and architect based in New York City. He currently is the Director of the Percent for Art Program at the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and an Adjunct Professor at New York University. Through his 15+ years of experience, Pardo López uses culture as a tool for social engagement, civic pride, and economic development. He has participated in the management and curation of numerous international projects. Most recently Pardo López has been appointed First Creative Mediator for the Manifesta 15 biennial.

Curator and critic Karen Wilkin, to her own surprise, has become the Studio School’s works on paper specialist. After organizing museum exhibitions of drawings by Anthony Caro, Jules Olitski, Helen Frankenthaler, David Smith, Stuart Davis, and Hans Hofmann, she has curated similar shows for NYSS, showcasing paper works by Jack Bush, George Grosz, Alberto Giacometti, Stanley Lewis, James Castle, David Humphrey, Medrie MacPhee, Susanna Heller, Karlis Rekevics, and Graham Nickson.
