Plot:
Isaac begins enrollment at the Salvatore school with everyone under the impression that he’s a newly turned werewolf with no family. In reality, he’s not just a werewolf, but also a supernatural creature who’s purpose is to protect humans- a gargoyle.

(I read that gargoyles are likely to be chimeras so the ‘McCall pack’ is definitely composed of such)

The gargoyles that exist among the supernaturals don’t harm other supernaturals unless they deem them dangerous (yes peter is on thin ice); however, once Hope- a werewolf, vampire and witch- activates her werewolf curse, she’s deemed too dangerous to stay alive by many other gargoyles. Isaac and the pack want to keep her safe so they send him to the school and the rest is pretty self explanatory.

( The knife/ancient artifact is a very powerful weapon that gargoyles can wield to protect humans from dangerous supernaturals. Isaac feels as though it’s not safe at the school so he pesters Hope about it until she gives it to him (and she does because she trusts his judgement.) When Alaric tells the tale about gargoyles, she puts two and two together and realizes that Isaac isn’t just a werewolf. )
