Regarding lore;
The Loner Toolshop; place where the Sledgehammer is encountered in-game, is a futuristic abandoned warehouse located in space, currently orbiting around a black hole. This facility was used as storage for weaponry and provided military supply for those of need in the various wars that occurred in the local solar systems.
Said facility --since its creation, contained a distinctive species of giant spiders called Mothrinths. Mothrinths are a native species and were undisturbed by humanoid and robotic activity in the facility, until it's dismissal. Overall, a new artificial environment was built from scratch, where flora and fauna coexisted. Through the years, the workers in the Loner Toolshop not only were dedicated to organization and administration of supplies and storage, but also the protection and care of the flora and fauna inside the facility.
It was not until various factors such as massive instability surrounding the black hole and galaxy-wide geopolitical issues that the facility was put to a halt, leading to the dismissal of its entire operation and workers. The warehouse was then abandoned, leaving the ecosystem to the mercy of fate.
Years passed and nobody could've predicted that, due to reality-altering interferences produced by the nearness of the black hole and the various chemicals that were left there, a new threatening species of flora emerged.
It is the 'parasitus vinem flora' --or Parasitic Trappers. These types of plants started to sprout from old fauna corpses, but unlike any other common plant, said flora had a genetic malfunction which deprived it from obtaining nutrients from photosynthesis. The only way of obtaining nutrients is by digesting fauna's cells, such as skin flesh, organs, or even bones.
So, many years after its closure, the Mothrinth population started to decline. The Parasitic Trappers were taking over the ecosystem, leading to an extinction of various species in the process. Parasitic Trappers are more dangerous during blooming season, as the production of flowers requires an enormous amount of nutrients, leading to a wave of spores and fast, aggresive reproduction of said flora, leading it to be even more dangerous. If a living being were to be infected during blooming season, their death will come earlier, as their nutrients will be absorbed four times faster than usual.
What was once a natural paradise, suddenly turned into a dark wasteland where no living thing was safe from this cancerous plant.
Nowadays, if one were to visit the Loner Toolshop, they ought to protect themselves from pollen, seeds or spores, or else they will end up possesed by the Parasitic Trapper, and live the rest of their lives in constant pain. And remember to watch out for the possesed Mothrinths; they are the most effective form of spreading the disease...
Mothrinths still fight for their lives, by hiding themselves from infected partners in old remnant boxes --which are still abundant in the facility. These boxes have been the key for their survival, and have built a new way of living inside them; they procreate and lay eggs in boxes, use boxes as camouflage, and hide their food stashes in them as well.
But, the infection is a step ahead. Because Mothrinths live and die inside of boxes, there are some cases where boxes are used by the Parasitic Trapper as literal traps, hiding themselves inside and waiting to attract Mothrinths to certain death.
