Real Sociedad expect midfielder Martin Zubimendi to agree a move to Liverpool, according to numerous people familiar with the situation at the Spanish club.
The Athletic previously reported that the Spanish club were aware of Liverpool’s interest in the 25-year-old.
Liverpool have been exploring a deal to sign Zubimendi as they work to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad with a new No 6 but a move for the Spain international is complicated by his €60million (£51.7m; $63.4m) release clause needing to be paid in full — if the La Liga club are not willing to negotiate a fee below that figure.
If Zubimendi asks to leave Real Sociedad, the club will grant his wish.
If he does agree to a move to the Premier League, he will become the first player since Xabi Alonso to leave the Basque club for Liverpool.
He would become Liverpool’s first signing under new head coach Arne Slot.
Liverpool had identified a new No 6 as the club’s main priority in the summer transfer window, as reported in Tuesday’s edition of the DealSheet.
Long-time Anfield stalwarts Jordan Henderson and Fabinho left the club last summer, while Thiago Alcantara retired from playing in July.
Zubimendi came through Real Sociedad’s academy and has made 187 appearances for the club since making his debut in 2019.
Real Sociedad have already seen one crucial first-team player depart this summer after a sixth-place finish in La Liga, with Spain international Robin Le Normand leaving for Atletico Madrid.
Fellow La Real midfielder Mikel Merino remains the subject of interest from Arsenal, who are also in the market for a defensive midfielder.
