If there remained any doubt about the relevance of shopping malls in the current day, I’d encourage you to check out CrossIron Mills. This behemoth, first opened in August 2009 and with an impressive 1,178,000 square feet of retail space.

Being Alberta’s largest single-floor retail mall, I marveled at the mass of people walking the wide corridors. Many of the 200+ shops appeared busy. In short, CrossIron Mills was far from the “ghost town malls” portrayed in fairly recent news articles. If CrossIron Mills is any indication, there might be something of a resurgence – at least to an extent. And why not? When you have large centres like this, with a plethora of shopping options for all, there is much to do and see.

CrossIron Mills demonstrates how and why malls like this have become far more than just places to shop; they are, rather, destinations (think a nice movie night out, for instance). For that reason, if you find yourself in Calgary, I think it’s worth taking the short drive to check out this lovely complex. You can shop, eat, and be entertained all under one roof!
