Lesson Discription:

A. In order to be proficient in reading Arabic, it’s
important to be good at pronouncing a consonant by
itself. It often occurs in the beginning of a word. e.g.:
nḥuṭṭ yḥuṭṭ tḥuṭṭ
ykallim tkallim nkallim
——————————————
B. Another essential part of Arabic articulation is called
gemination or šadda in Arabic. So when you see double
letters, you’ll pronounce the letter twice as hard rather
than the English tendency to pronounce the letter softer.
ʔallāh šadda nnār
dābba ḥuṭṭ zzayy
——————————————
C. Arabic is easy to read, because each letter only
makes one sound and both long vowels and short
vowels are specified. Each symbol should be
pronounced the same way every time. If a vowel has a
dash above it, it should be twice as long as a short
vowel.
*Note: in Arabic script, long vowels are represented with consonants A, W, or Y. Whereas, short vowels are not even written.
lʔān ʕāʔila t̠ gīl
mālik malak malik
——————————————
D. The letter L added in the beginning of a word is a
prefix that can either be short for ʔal- (meaning “the”) or
sometimes li- (meaning “for”). you may pronounce them
fully for additional clarification, but it can be inferred
through context. You can also combine them to make lil-
(“for the”). However, only with the meaning of “the” does
the L sound merge with sun letters.
——————————————
Sun letters — are letters that require contact between
the tongue and the teeth in order to pronounce the
sound of the letter correctly. For future reference, the
letters that require-teeth contact are:
s ṣ š t t̠ ṭ d ð ḍ ẓ z r n l
‎ل ن ر ز ظ ض ذ د ط ث ت ش ص س
lʔān lʕāʔila t̠ t̠ gīl
lilwalad lissiyyāra rrawāḥ
——————————————
E. There are some emphatic letters that sway the
pronunciation of the letters surrounding them. The
vowels around such letters become heavier. This is
called tafxīm. Non-tafxīm letters are called tarqīq letters.
*Note that tafxīm letters are usually weakened by the
letter i/ī.
The tafxīm letters are the following:
x r ṣ ḍ ẓ ṭ ɢ̠ g
‎ق غ ط ظ ض ص ر خ
ṣālṣa maṭbax sigāra
ʔarḍ ẓālim rāḥ
rabb xāmis ṭamāṭ
*Implement this rule when memorizing vocabulary.
