Don’t Be Scared of Saturated Color! is a bold and energetic Art School Live demo dedicated to mastering intense, vibrant skies in pastel. If you’ve ever hesitated to use strong color, this session will show you how to handle saturation with confidence and control.

Working on a level 8 dark, non-sanded charcoal paper (not black), the demo reveals how surface choice dramatically affects color relationships. On dark paper, mid-tones and darker saturated hues appear richer and more luminous than they would on white. You’ll see how this supports dramatic skies and allows saturated passages to glow.

Because pastels can’t be physically mixed like paint, color selection and layering become critical. The session begins with building a “color story”—carefully selecting dynamic combinations of value and temperature before touching the paper. You’ll learn how placing a darker value beneath a slightly lighter saturated color intensifies its brilliance, how to use warm/cool relationships for vibration, and how to create softer transitions with muted companion hues.

Additional techniques include layering top to bottom to manage dust, gently pressing pigment into the surface for stability, working clean to maintain brilliance, and experimenting until harmony feels right. By the end, you’ll understand how to use saturation intentionally—creating skies that feel electric, atmospheric, and alive without becoming chaotic.
