Along the way we pass the Holbeck Clock Tower, Scarborough Spa, the Grand Hotel, the Cliff Lift and St Nicholas Gardens. From the harbour we can see the ruins of Scarborough Castle in the distance. This route is certainly a lovely way to approach Scarborough, from above the cliff tops right down to the sea. The difference between the bustling seaside resort with the rides, amusement arcades and confectionary compared with the serenity of the calm harbour is quite astonishing. I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I did.

Situated in North Yorkshire, Scarborough is the largest town on the Yorkshire Coast and the fourth-largest settlement in the county. It is claimed to have been founded around 966 AD as Skarðaborg by Thorgils Skarthi, a Viking raider who built a stronghold here: hence the name 'Skarthi's Burh'.

The grade II listed Holbeck Clock Tower was gifted to the South Cliff by businessman Alfred Shuttleworth in commemoration of the coronation of George V in 1911.

The Italian Gardens were designed by Scarborough Civic Engineer Harry W. Smith also in 1911.

Spa waters were discovered in the 17th century, bubbling out beneath the cliff to the south of the town. The slightly bitter waters which stained the rocks a russet colour were said to cure minor ailments and drinking them soon became an accepted medicine. Later, thousands of visitors flocked to benefit from their supposed medicinal qualities as the southern part of Scarborough became extremely popular, and the precursor to the present Scarborough Spa complex became a fashionable attraction.

Scarborough Spa became the most popular music hall venue outside London when it was opened in 1858, following the opening of the Spa Bridge on 19 July 1827 which crowds flocked to see as a mail coach and horses galloped at full speed across it. And in 1875, the first cliff tram in England was built to improve access to the Spa and it still remains in use today.

The Grand Hotel in Scarborough overlooks the South Bay and is a Grade II* listed building owned by Britannia Hotels. At the time of its grand opening in 1867, it was the largest hotel and the largest brick structure in Europe.

Scarborough Castle is a former medieval royal fortress situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea and Scarborough and dates from the 1150s. Archaeological excavations in the 1920s produced evidence which suggests a hill fort was built on the headland where the castle now stands. Finds were dated to between 900–500 BC, with a Bronze Age sword which is on display in the castle exhibition among the finds.
