Experimental Farm Proves
Alfalfa Grows In Mindanao
Here is a bit of good and inspiring news to start the week, especially for the Rabbit and Dairy Sector of Philippine Agriculture.
Two months after we sowed seeds of table Alfalfa in a small experimental farm in Polomolok, South Cotabato, we made the first cut and harvested an equivalent of 5-metric tons per hectare.
This number does not only prove that Alfalfa could be grown in the Mindanao but more importantly that growing it in volume could be economically viable.
The growing of Alfalfa is one of the advocacy projects of the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc., an agricultural company which I, Senator Panfilo Lacson, Rocky French and four other friends formed a few months ago.
While SAAV Inc. is involved in Sorghum production for food and animal feeds, we thought of conducting other advocacy activities to help the country achieve Food Self Sufficiency.
Alfalfa, which many said in the past could not be grown in the Philippines, is a very important forage for rabbit raisers, especially for young rabbits, and the Dairy Cow and Goat farmers.
"Alfalfa is a perennial legume related to the pea and bean family. Being a legume, alfalfa provides excellent levels of good quality protein and due to a deep root system also provides naturally occurring minerals. Dengie alfalfa is harvested at a young age and then high temperature dried. This helps to retain nutrients and provides a consistently clean forage source. As a digestible source of fibre, when fed as part of a nutritionally balanced diet, alfalfa makes a great addition to any rabbit ration," according to researches made by American feed companies.
According to literature available in the internet, Alfalfa offers the following benefits for Dairy Farmers:
High proportion of highly digestible cell contents
High protein content
High proportion of soluble protein and potential rumen-degradable protein (RDP)
Faster digestion rate of neutral detergent fiber (NDF)
Lesser extent of NDF digestion
Faster rate of rumen passage
Stimulates less cud chewing
Increased buffering capacity
For the fledgling Rabbit Industry in the Philippines, "Alfalfa is known as a great hay for baby rabbits, as it contains higher calcium and protein levels to help support healthy growth and development. Like many other types of hay, Alfalfa is excellent for encouraging your small animals to forage and naturally graze."
With the successful trials, SAAV Inc. will now plant Alfalfa in a larger area to make Alfalfa hay and pellets available to our Rabbit and Dairy farmers by mid 2023.
