My sixteenth birthday started like any other day—no special plans, no reminders to anyone. I wasn’t expecting much since my family has never made a big deal out of birthdays. But when I went downstairs, my parents didn’t even mention it. I tried to shake off the disappointment, thinking maybe they had a surprise planned, but the day went on as usual.

At school, my best friend remembered and gave me a card, which lifted my spirits a bit. But when I got home, my parents still didn’t acknowledge my birthday. We had dinner like it was any other day, and I went to bed feeling hurt and confused.

Three days later, my mom suddenly got angry, blaming me for not reminding them about my birthday. I was stunned—they had forgotten, but somehow, it was my fault. To make things worse, I got grounded and lost my phone over it.

Fortunately, my best friend stepped in and organized a small celebration with her family. It was a simple gathering, but it meant the world to me. For a few hours, I felt loved and appreciated, something I didn’t get from my own parents that year.
