Due to the accumulation of fly ash, a residue from the coal fired North Chennai Thermal Power station, the air, water and soil in Kattukuppam along the banks of the Kosasthalaiyar river and Seppakkam have been contaminated. The once broad and deep Kosasthalaiyar river has become narrow. There are several species of fish and crab that have disappeared due to the continuous erosion of the mangroves. Despite alerting the authorities, there has been not much done to conserve the rich marine diversity. The pollution has increased manifold over the years.
