Japan has added the fin whale, a marine mammal once classified as endangered, to its list of species targeted for commercial whaling, sparking concern among conservationists.On May 9, the Japanese government announced that fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) would become a target for whaling ships within the country’s exclusive economic zone, according to the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA). The inclusion of fin whales brings the total number of whale species hunted commercially in Japan to four, alongside minke, Bryde’s, and sei whales.
