STORYLINE:
Pakistan's President arrived in China on Sunday for a five-day visit aimed at boosting economic and energy cooperation between the close allies.
General Pervez Musharraf began his high level talks by expressing his condolences for the deaths of three Chinese engineers who were shot and killed with their local driver last week in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province.
"I would, first of all express the nation's regret and condolences on this very sad incident of the killing of three Chinese. It's a shame for the country," he said at the start of a meeting with Wu Bangguo, China's No. 2 Communist Party leader.
Musharraf is scheduled to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and other senior Chinese officials and said earlier he plans to discuss ways the two countries can expand their economic ties and cooperation in defence and nuclear energy.
The bodies of the three Chinese engineers killed in Pakistan were flown home on Saturday.
Shortly after the shooting, an ethnic Baluch militant group claimed responsibility.
Pakistan has since detained 50 suspects in an effort to capture those responsible.
China and Pakistan are neighbours and long-time allies.
The communist nation is the biggest weapons supplier to Pakistan, a conservative Muslim country.
In the past, Western nations have accused Beijing of providing Islamabad with advanced ballistic missiles.
Pakistan, which has developed both medium and long-range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, denies the charge and says its missile programme is home grown.
On Sunday, Pakistan successfully test fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile, named as short-range Haft-II Abdali, with a 200-kilometre (124-mile)
range, the military said.
Musharraf's visit is timed to coincide with the 55th anniversary of relations with China.
