(16 Sep 2014) Russian lawmakers on Tuesday criticised the ratification by the Ukrainian parliament of an agreement to deepen economic and political ties with the European Union.
State Duma lawmaker and former boxer Nikolay Valuyev said the agreement with the EU will have bad consequences for Ukraine.
Valuyev said that the agreement would destroy Ukrainian economy.
Another lawmaker from the United Russia party, Franz Klintsevich, warned that the Russian government will have to close its borders for any European products coming through Ukraine, "because we clearly understand that the pretty cheap high quality products from Europe won't be able to compete with either Ukrainian or Russian ones."
The EU association agreement was long sought by Ukrainians who want their country to turn westward and out of Russia's sphere of influence.
After then-President Viktor Yanukovych shelved the deal last year, protests broke out that eventually spiralled into violence and led to Yanukovych fleeing the country.
In the wake of that, Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula and a pro-Russia rebellion broke out in eastern Ukraine.
