In a world that seems to expect perfection and criticize us at the first sign of imperfection, we’ve become too afraid to be ourselves. It has caused many of people, even people you might know, to abandon who they are in return for perceived acceptance. The reality is individuals don’t want this incomplete version of who we are. They want the complete us. So the question is: Why do we do this? Why do we surrender part of who we are for something that isn’t beneficial for anybody? What if we all recognized the issue and tried to fix it? What if we all understood that, really, we’re all a bunch of broken crayons? Award-winning teacher, author, and coach. Early on, I learned unique lessons about leadership and self-discovery. At age 16, a time when I did not believe in myself and felt like there was no hope, I found myself trying to survive between homes of friends and family. It was during this time that I started to appreciate being surrounded by those who encouraged and believed in my potential to be more. With their help, I was able to get back on track, and start working toward my goals. After graduating high school, I attended Idaho State University and got my degree in Accounting. But I quickly realized my heart wasn’t in it. That’s when I decided to pursue my original plan in education. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
